Kendwa

Kendwa has no park entry fee. Daily costs depend on accommodation and activities: budget beach lodges range $25-50 USD per night, mid-range beachfront hotels $80-150 USD per night. Snorkeling activities cost $20-40 USD per person for half-day guided trips; diving certifications run $300-400 USD for open-water courses. Average daily budget including meals and activities is $85-120 USD per person.

Visit June through October during the dry season for calm seas, excellent diving/snorkeling visibility (15-20 meters), and lower humidity. Peak tourism months are July-September and December-January. Shoulder seasons (April-May, October-November) offer fewer tourists, lower prices, and still-pleasant weather. Avoid April-May and November if you prefer completely dry conditions, as brief afternoon rains occur during these months.

Kendwa remains unaffected by tidal changes, allowing swimming and water activities at any time of day—a unique advantage over tide-dependent beaches like Paje or Bwejuu. The beach is significantly quieter than nearby Nungwe, with fewer resorts and fewer tourists, making it ideal for travelers seeking solitude. Direct-access snorkeling from shore eliminates the need for boat transfers, and the beach's sheltered position offers calm, clear water suitable for inexperienced swimmers.

Fly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), 50 km south of Kendwa (1-hour drive), or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), 480 km on mainland Tanzania (6-hour drive plus ferry). Most visitors arrange airport transfers through their lodge, costing $30-60 USD for shared shuttles or $80-120 USD for private transfers. Alternatively, fly into mainland Tanzania, complete a safari circuit in the Serengeti or <a href="/destinations/tarangire-sopa-lodge">Tarangire</a>, then take a domestic flight or overnight ferry to Zanzibar.
