Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

A full-day Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary safari typically costs $300-$400 USD per person, including guided rhino trekking, nature walks, ranger services, and park fees. Overnight camping options cost $50-$100 USD per person for accommodation plus meal charges. Most travelers book through safari operators offering multi-day packages that combine Ziwa with Murchison Falls National Park, which reduces per-day costs through package pricing.

The dry seasons—December to February and late June to October—offer the best visiting conditions with reduced rainfall, easier game viewing, and comfortable walking conditions. During dry season, animals concentrate around watering holes, making rhino trekking more successful. Wet seasons (March-May and November) bring lush vegetation but muddy roads and afternoon storms that can limit activities. Peak visitor months (December-January and August) offer reliable weather but more crowded experiences; visiting in shoulder months (September-November) provides excellent conditions with fewer tourists.

Ziwa's primary attraction is the 40+ southern white rhinos you can track on foot—the only place in Uganda offering this experience. The sanctuary also protects 40 mammal species including waterbuck, oribi, hartebeest, sitatunga antelope, vervet monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, warthogs, and various reptiles like pythons and monitor lizards. Over 300 bird species inhabit the sanctuary, including the rare shoebill stork, African fish eagles, kingfishers, and crowned cranes. Hippos and Nile crocodiles are present in wetland areas, though encounters are less common than with terrestrial mammals.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is accessed via the main Kampala-Gulu Highway, 164 kilometers north of Kampala (3-hour drive). The yellow-signed turnoff leads 4 kilometers on maintained dirt road to sanctuary gates. Most visitors arrange transfers through their safari operator or rent vehicles from Kampala; the sanctuary is 60 kilometers from Masindi town and 2.5 hours from Murchison Falls National Park. Charter flights can land at Masindi Airstrip (60 kilometers south) for faster access from Kampala. Self-drive is possible in dry season with 2WD vehicles; 4WD recommended during wet months.
