About Khwai Concession

Khwai Concession is one of the most accessible yet exclusive parts of the Okavango Delta, comprising the NG18 and NG19 concessions spanning 200,000 hectares (2,000 km²). Converted from former hunting concessions by safari operator Natural Selection in collaboration with local communities, this relatively recent addition to Botswana's wildlife reserves sits between Moremi Game Reserve to the west and Chobe to the east. The concession offers a private corner of the Okavango with fabulous wildlife viewing and minimal crowds compared to other Delta destinations. The landscape features reed-lined channels, patches of open water, islands with fever-berry and riparian trees, acacia woodland, and mopane woodland, with Borassus palms crowning many islands. Water levels fluctuate annually, creating ever-changing scenery and wildlife distribution patterns. The Khwai River serves as a major magnet for game, particularly during the dry season when large herds congregate. The concession is less unpredictable regarding water levels than other Okavango areas and remains accessible by road throughout most of the year. Wildlife populations increased rapidly after establishment, making it comparable to nearby Okavango destinations. Activities include guided and self-guided game drives with off-road driving permitted in some areas, night drives, walking safaris, and mokoro trips along tributaries. The reserve offers a mix of budget and luxury accommodations, from community campsites to upmarket lodges, though visitor numbers have increased with growing community campsite development.
