About Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is Kenya's most popular national park and a premier wildlife destination centered on a large, shallow alkaline lake in the Great Rift Valley. The park covers 188 square kilometers and is renowned for its dramatic Rift Valley escarpment scenery, dotted with distinctive yellow fever trees and euphorbia vegetation that create stunning visual landscapes, particularly in early morning light. The park's varied habitats support an excellent range of wildlife, making it ideal for safari enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike. Lake Nakuru is particularly famous for its successful black and white rhino populations, which were reintroduced in the 1980s and have bred to healthy numbers, making rhino sightings relatively easy and reliable. The park also hosts Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo, hippo, and numerous predators including lions that occasionally climb trees and elusive leopards. The lake itself is a birdwatcher's paradise, supporting great populations of pelicans and flamingos, though water levels have fluctuated dramatically in recent years, affecting both flamingo populations and trail accessibility. The park's compactness and accessibility from the nearby city of Nakuru make it perfect for visitors with limited time, families with small children, and those seeking rewarding game-viewing combined with stunning lake views. The Out of Africa Lookout offers breathtaking vistas reminiscent of the famous film scene, while Makalia Falls in the park's south provides a moderately impressive waterfall surrounded by acacia forest.
