About Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East National Park is Kenya's largest national park, covering approximately 13,747 square kilometers of vast semi-arid wilderness. This spectacular park is renowned for its distinctive red soil, which coats the park's famous elephant herds, creating a striking visual spectacle. The landscape features barren plains, grasslands, semi-arid shrub, and the emerald-green Galana River with its dramatic Lugard Falls. The park's topography varies from flat scrubland to the Yatta Plateau in the north, offering diverse terrain for exploration. Tsavo East is home to the Big Five, with particular emphasis on large elephant populations and the park's unique maneless lions, which are found nowhere else in such numbers. The park also hosts cheetahs, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and numerous other wildlife species, making it a premier destination for wildlife viewing. The park's proximity to Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline makes it the most accessible major park for visitors staying at the beach, allowing for convenient combinations of safari and coastal experiences. With excellent accommodations ranging from budget campsites to luxury lodges and tented camps, both inside the park and just outside the western gate, Tsavo East caters to all visitor preferences. The park offers a genuine wilderness experience, particularly in its remote northern regions beyond the Galana River, where adventurous travelers can explore vast unexplored areas away from the typical tourist routes.
