March to May is the rainy season with limited road accessibility, especially to Udzungwa. Udzungwa Mountains National Park hosts 12 primate species including colobus monkeys and the endangered Iringa red colobus found nowhere else on Earth. Over 400 bird species inhabit the region, including crowned eagles and fish eagles. Mikumi National Park contains all major large mammals: lions (including tree-climbing populations), leopards, elephants, buffalo, hippos, giraffes, and impala herds of up to 100. The combined region has 2,500 plant species with 25% endemic to Udzungwa, making it one of Africa's 34 biodiversity hotspots.

Fly into Dar es Salaam International Airport (DAR), 196 km east of Morogoro (3-4 hour drive via the A7 highway). Charter flights to Mikumi Airstrip are available for time-saving. From Morogoro town, reach Udzungwa Mountains National Park headquarters at Mang'ula (60 km, 2-2.5 hours by 4WD vehicle) or Mikumi National Park (100 km, 2-3 hours). The main highway is paved but requires high-clearance vehicles for park access roads, especially during rainy season (March-May). Most travelers arrange airport transfers through safari operators.
