Tsavo West National Park

The best time to visit is during the dry seasons: June to October and January to February. These periods offer optimal game viewing as wildlife concentrates around water sources. However, the park is accessible year-round, and the wet season provides lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching opportunities with 600+ bird species.

Tsavo West offers diverse accommodation ranging from budget to luxury. Options include public and special campsites, bandas/guesthouses managed by KWS, and privately-owned luxury lodges such as Kilaguni Serena Lodge, Finch Hatton's Tented Camp, Voyager Safari Camp, Kitani Severin Safari Camp, and Ngulia Safari Lodge. Reservations can be made through the park warden or KWS headquarters (reservations@kws.go.ke).

Tsavo West offers unique activities including night game drives (KES 3,000 for EA citizens/Kenya residents), walking safaris (KES 3,000 or USD 50 for non-residents), overnight rhino viewing (KES 3,000 for citizens), and security-guided tours. The park is one of the few in Kenya allowing night drives and off-road safaris, providing closer encounters with nocturnal wildlife.

Tsavo West is home to diverse wildlife including lions (famous for historical man-eater incidents), leopards, cheetahs, African elephants, black rhinos (at Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary), buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wild dogs, crocodiles, and various smaller species. The park features over 600 bird species, making it exceptional for birdwatching enthusiasts.

The park is accessible from Mombasa (240km, 4-5 hours), Nairobi (330km, 6-7 hours), or via domestic flights to park airstrips. Multiple entrance gates include Mtito Andei and Chyulu Gates. Most visitors arrive by private vehicle or organized safari operators. Vehicle charges range from KES 300-5,000 daily depending on passenger capacity. Internal roads may require 4x4 vehicles during rainy seasons.
