This usually covers accommodation, transport, selected meals and guided game drives, while international flights, drinks, tips and some park fees may be extra. Mombasa is a city, so it has no single safari entry fee.

The best time to visit Mombasa is June to October, when conditions are relatively dry for beach time and nearby Tsavo game drives. January and February are also hot and generally dry. March to May and November to December are wetter, often quieter periods that can provide lower accommodation rates.

Mombasa is a coastal city, so major safari wildlife is seen on trips to nearby reserves rather than in the city centre. Tsavo safaris can feature African elephants, lions, buffalo, leopards, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hippos. Most international and domestic visitors arrive at Moi International Airport (MBA), about 9 km from Mombasa Island. You can also take the Madaraka Express from Nairobi or drive the A109 route, which commonly takes 8 to 10 hours. Domestic safari flights from the coast connect with destinations including Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo West. [1]

Mombasa is good for families because it combines beach hotels with short, flexible safari extensions to Tsavo. Children can enjoy supervised beach time, boat trips, cultural visits and age-appropriate game drives, but each lodge sets its own minimum age for drives and walking activities. Families should book private vehicles where possible and use strong sun and mosquito protection.
