Ziwa Rhino And Wildlife Ranch

Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is Uganda's only location where endangered Southern White Rhinos can be observed in their natural wild habitat. Rhinos went extinct in Uganda 40 years ago due to poaching and habitat loss. Established in 2005 as a collaborative effort between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and private management, the sanctuary serves as a breeding and rehabilitation center where rhino populations are expanded and gradually reintroduced into Uganda's national parks, making it integral to global rhino conservation efforts.

Visitors can track the endangered White Rhinos on foot at close range, which is a unique experience not available in many other African locations. All rhino tracking must be conducted with trained ranger guides who ensure both visitor safety and animal welfare. The proximity allows for exceptional wildlife photography and intimate wildlife encounters while maintaining appropriate distance to avoid disturbing the animals.

The dry seasons (June to August and December to February) offer the best rhino sighting opportunities. During these periods, wildlife concentrates around water sources, and vegetation is less dense, providing better visibility. However, rhinos can be spotted year-round at the sanctuary. Early morning and late afternoon game drives and walks provide the highest probability of successful wildlife encounters.

While rhinos are the main attraction, Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch hosts diverse wildlife including leopards, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, white-faced whistling ducks, shoebills (rare bird species), and various antelope species such as Bush Duiker, Waterbuck, Oribi, Hartbeest, Grey Duiker, Reedbuck, and Bush Bucks. The sanctuary also features abundant butterflies, reptiles, and primates, offering comprehensive wildlife viewing opportunities.
