The Machame Route is considered a difficult route and is better suited for more adventurous trekkers with some hiking or backpacking experience. While it is easier overall compared to some other routes, certain sections are steeper and more physically demanding than alternatives like the Marangu and Rongai routes. We recommend having prior trekking or hiking experience before attempting this climb.
The Machame Route is excellent for acclimatization with lots of 'walk high, sleep low' opportunities built into the itinerary. Additionally, the 7-day package includes a good opportunity to split the pre-summit day climb, allowing climbers to rest properly before the final push to the summit. This design helps your body adjust gradually to the increasing altitude.
The package includes three meals daily (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) throughout the 7 days. Accommodation is provided as per the itinerary and includes quality mess tents with table and chairs, as well as a sleeping mattress. All meals are covered in the package price.
The Machame Route is scenically beautiful and varied, taking you through 5 diverse climatic zones. You'll experience stunning views of the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco wall, and a traverse underneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice field. The route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends via the Mweka route for a rewarding experience.
The package includes all park entrance fees, accommodation, three daily meals, a professional English-speaking guide, bottled water, airport transfers, quality camping equipment, all mountain transfers, your summit certificate, rescue fees, and emergency oxygen. Excluded costs include international airfare, travel insurance, visa fees, alcoholic beverages, tips and gratuities, personal expenses, optional activities, and travel vaccinations. Please budget for these additional expenses separately.
The Machame Route is nicknamed the 'Whiskey' route because it is popularized as being somewhat difficult and more expensive than the Marangu route. However, despite this nickname, the Machame Route is actually considered one of the best routes to take on Kilimanjaro in terms of both acclimatization and cost-effectiveness compared to other premium routes.
Travel insurance and travel vaccinations are not included in this package and are your personal responsibility. We strongly recommend obtaining comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and evacuation. Regarding vaccinations, please consult with your healthcare provider or a travel clinic for current recommendations for Tanzania, as requirements may vary based on your origin country and personal health history.
