Anja Community Reserve

No, feeding lemurs is now prohibited. Although feeding was once permitted, it is no longer allowed to protect the animals' natural diet and behavior. Visitors can approach within a few meters for photography and observation without feeding.

A standard visit takes approximately 1.5 hours on the short trail, which focuses on lemur observation and visits to traditional Betsileo tombs. For more adventurous visitors, a long trail hike to the summit of Iandrambaky granite dome takes up to 6 hours. Most tourists visit as a stopover while traveling Route Nationale 7.

Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to observe ring-tailed lemur activity and interactions. During these periods, lemurs are most active and engaged in natural behaviors, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

Anja Reserve is 66 kilometers south of Fianarantsoa with a driving time of 1-2 hours via Route Nationale 7. While the distance is manageable, Madagascar's road conditions can be challenging. Poor road surfaces and potential delays should be expected. Most visitors arrange transportation through tour operators or hire vehicles with experienced local drivers.

The reserve hosts diverse wildlife including three species of lizards, Madagascar tree boa, chameleons (Oustalet's and jewel species), Madagascar plated lizards, Barbour's day gecko, bats, owls, and unique insects like the Malagasy Lantern Bug. Reptile sightings are common on rocks and trees throughout the reserve.
