Danakil Depression

A Danakil Depression expedition commonly costs about US$200 to US$350 per person per day, depending on group size, domestic flights, vehicle standard and camping arrangements. A three-day shared camping tour was advertised from CAD 773 per person, while longer private or tailor-made expeditions cost more. Prices usually include 4x4 transport, guides, camp equipment, meals and local logistics; there is no single universal park-entry fee. [5]

The best time to visit Danakil Depression is October through March, when guided travel is more manageable than during the hottest months. November to February is the main visitor season, while April through September can bring extreme daytime heat and more difficult camping conditions.

Danakil Depression is not a Big Five safari destination, and wildlife is sparse around its central salt flats and geothermal fields. The wider Afar landscape can support African wild ass, Dorcas gazelle, Beisa oryx, hamadryas baboon, striped hyena and desert birds, but sightings are not guaranteed. Combine Danakil with Awash National Park if wildlife viewing is a priority.

Most travelers fly from Addis Ababa to Semera Airport, then join a pre-arranged 4x4 convoy for a 3-to-5-hour drive into the Danakil touring area. Some routes have historically started from Mekelle, with an overland drive of about 6 to 8 hours when that route is operational. [7]

Danakil Depression is usually better suited to fit, heat-tolerant adults and older teenagers than to young children. Conditions include intense heat, long off-road drives, basic camping and remote medical access; at least one shared tour sets a minimum age of 18.
