Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is partly in a low-risk malaria area. Visitors should consult their healthcare provider about malaria prophylaxis, particularly if traveling during warmer months (November-March). Standard precautions such as using insect repellent and wearing appropriate clothing are recommended.

Operation Rhino was a landmark conservation project conducted in the iMfolozi section during the 1950s and 1960s. It successfully saved the Southern White Rhino from the brink of extinction through innovative wildlife capture and relocation techniques. This pioneering effort transformed the reserve into a world-renowned conservation success story and established the foundation for modern wildlife management practices.

The reserve offers both options. Visitors can conduct self-drive safaris using their own vehicles on well-maintained internal roads, or book guided safari tours with experienced rangers. Guided options include 3-hour, half-day, and full-day safaris. The Wilderness Trails offer guided walking experiences. Guided safaris are recommended for first-time visitors and provide expert wildlife interpretation.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is Africa's oldest proclaimed game reserve, established in 1895. It is the only state-run park in KwaZulu-Natal where all Big Five animals occur. The reserve is historically significant for Operation Rhino and pioneered the famous Wilderness Trails concept in the 1950s. Its diverse ecosystems and successful conservation efforts make it a premier safari destination with exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is approximately 2.5 hours' drive north of Durban via the N2 highway. Visitors can rent vehicles at King Shaka International Airport (150-180 km away) or book accommodations that include guided transfers. Most lodges offer safari packages with transportation. The drive through KwaZulu-Natal provides scenic views and the reserve is easily accessible for day trips or multi-day stays from Durban.
