Maun is Botswana's tourism capital and serves as the primary gateway to the Okavango Delta. As the third-largest town in Botswana, it functions as the main hub for safari expeditions, wildlife tours, and air charters to remote camps throughout the delta and surrounding game reserves. Most visitors use Maun as their launching point for adventures into the wilderness.
Sir Seretse Khama International Airport is located 15km from Maun town center and receives direct flights from major southern African cities including Johannesburg and Cape Town. From the airport, ground transportation via rental vehicles or shuttle services provides easy access to town accommodations. Light aircraft charters from Maun connect to remote safari camps throughout the region.
Key attractions include the Thamalakane River for mokoro cruises, Maun Wildlife Educational Park featuring antelope and small mammals, Maun Game Reserve's forest groves, the Nhabe Museum showcasing local history and culture, and proximity to Moremi Game Reserve. The Okavango Delta itself is the primary draw, accessible via multiple safari operators and air charters.
The dry season from April to October provides optimal wildlife viewing, with May through September offering the most comfortable conditions. April-May features spectacular zebra migrations at Boteti River. July-September is peak season with excellent game viewing and moderate temperatures. The wet season (November-March) is better for birdwatchers but offers fewer wildlife sightings.
Activities include Okavango Delta safaris, mokoro rides on the Thamalakane River, 4x4 off-road adventures, quad biking, fishing expeditions, riverboat cruises, wildlife walks at the educational park, museum visits, and light aircraft charters to remote locations. Both adventure seekers and leisure travelers find suitable options.
