Virunga Volcanic Chain

Mountain gorilla permits cost $1,500 USD per person (standard rate as of 2024). Park entry is $82 USD. Daily costs including lodge (mid-range), meals, and guides typically run $350-500 USD per person. A 4-day gorilla trekking package averages $2,000-3,500 USD total per person, depending on accommodation and operator.

June to September (dry season) is optimal for gorilla trekking with clearer skies, firmer trails, and better mountain views. December to February is the secondary dry season with fewer crowds and lower prices. Avoid March to May (long rains) when trails become muddy and visibility drops significantly. October to November is passable but wetter.

Mountain gorillas are the primary attraction—12 habituated families available for trekking. Golden monkeys, endemic to Virunga, are easily tracked in bamboo forests. The park hosts 178 bird species including three globally threatened species (African Green Broadbill, Lagden's Bush shrike, Kivu Ground Thrush). Also present: African elephants, Cape buffalo, leopards, servals, duikers, and spotted hyenas.

Fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL), 135 km away (3-hour drive via paved highway to Musanze town). From Musanze, it's 45 minutes by 4WD to Kinigi park headquarters. Alternatively, fly into Entebbe International Airport (Uganda, 210 km) or Bukavu Airport (DRC, 85 km west). Most visitors arrange airport transfers through their safari operator.

Gorilla trekking requires hikers to walk 4-7 hours on steep, muddy trails at high altitude—generally suitable for children 10 years and older with good fitness. Younger children can enjoy golden monkey tracking, bird watching, and cultural village visits. Some lodges offer family suites and child-friendly activities. Consult your operator about age-appropriate itineraries and altitude considerations.
