Lake Ihema

Park entry for foreign non-residents is $100 USD per adult per day. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema cost $40 per person and are scheduled at 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 3:00 PM, and 4:30 PM; private boat trips can be arranged at other times. Guided game drives, community visits, and other activities are available through lodges. A typical 3-day safari package including accommodation, meals, and activities ranges from $500-$2,000 per person depending on lodge choice.

The best time is November to April during the dry season, when short grass improves animal visibility and wildlife concentrates around water sources. June to September is the secondary dry season with cooler temperatures and fewer tourists. Avoid April-May and October-November during rainy seasons, when roads deteriorate and visibility decreases. Peak season is December-January with the warmest weather and most consistent wildlife sightings.

Lake Ihema is home to one of East Africa's largest hippo concentrations, Nile crocodiles, and over 500 bird species including the rare shoebill stork, African fish eagles, and malachite kingfishers. Lakeside herds of African elephants are common as they wade in to bathe. The park also contains all Big Five mammals: lions (reintroduced 2015), eastern black rhinos (reintroduced 2017), cape buffalo, giraffes, and zebras in the surrounding savanna plains.

Fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL), 110 km from the park (approximately 2.5 hours by road). From Kigali, drive south to the Mutumba Gate (the only self-drive entrance). Charter helicopter access is available to airstrips within the park. The main road from Kigali is paved and in good condition; internal park roads require a 4×4 vehicle, especially during rainy seasons.

Yes, Lake Ihema is family-friendly with several accommodation options suitable for children. Ruzizi Tented Lodge welcomes families and offers daytime boat safaris that are safe for older children (typically 8+). Wilderness Magashi has family suites and flexible activity schedules. Game drives can be tailored for children's energy levels and interests.
