May to September (dry season) offers the best wildlife viewing, with sparse vegetation and concentrated animals around water sources. July-August is peak season with the most visitors. November to March (wet season) features lush landscapes, migratory birds, and lower prices, though afternoon thunderstorms can disrupt activities. October and April are shoulder seasons with moderate crowds and good game viewing. For malaria risk, the dry season (May-September) has lower mosquito activity.

Zuka Private Game Reserve is home to all Big Five: lion, leopard, rhino (both white and black species), elephant, and buffalo. You'll also see wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and 380+ bird species including fish eagles and crowned eagles. In May 2024, 40 southern white rhinoceros were translocated to the reserve as part of the African Parks Rhino Rewild initiative, significantly boosting rhino populations. Early morning and late afternoon drives offer the best sighting chances.

The nearest major airport is King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban, approximately 180 km away (3-hour drive). From Durban, drive north on the N2 highway toward Hluhluwe, then follow local roads to the reserve entrance. Charter flights are available from Durban to airstrips within or adjacent to the reserve for faster access. Most lodges arrange ground transfers from the airport for an additional fee.
